For many pets, a trip to the vet ranks among life's most stressful events. The unfamiliar smells, the handling by strangers, and the carrier itself can trigger real anxiety — and an anxious pet is harder to examine, harder to treat, and more likely to associate the clinic with fear.

The good news is that with some preparation, you can dramatically reduce your pet's stress — and your own.

Before the Appointment

  • Carrier training: Leave the carrier out at home with a cosy blanket inside. Let your pet explore it freely so it becomes a safe space, not a trap.
  • Short practice trips: Drive your pet around the block a few times without going to the vet. This breaks the association between the car and the clinic.
  • Calming sprays: Spray the carrier with a synthetic pheromone product (Feliway for cats, Adaptil for dogs) 30 minutes before travel.

At the Clinic

  • Arrive a few minutes early and wait outside or in a quiet corner rather than the busy waiting room.
  • Keep your own body language calm — pets read your tension immediately.
  • Bring high-value treats to reward calm behaviour throughout the visit.

If your pet's anxiety is severe, speak to our team about medication options before the next visit. Helping pets feel safe is at the heart of everything we do.
